Teen years are a time of transition from childhood to adulthood. It can be a tough period. Teenagers often struggle with being dependent on their parents while having a strong desire to be independent. They often avoid disclosing personal information to parents as a function of their normal struggle for independence. By definition, they are trying to define who they are. Even though it is a normal part of the teen years, sometimes parents can feel frustrated.
Teen years are a time of tremendous psychological, physical, social, and neurological changes. Teenagers experience a wide range of mood swings. Studies show that teens experience wide variations of both negative and positive emotions. It’s normal for teens to cycle through up and down moods.
They can appear very dejected and depressed for couple of days when they are not invited to a ‘particular party’. This might be bewildering and worrisome for parents. However, if the ups and/or downs become extreme, and they last a lot longer, parents need to take it seriously and get professional help.
